Headaches Q&A

What is headache?

A headache refers to pain or discomfort in the head or face and is one of the most common types of pain people experience. There are several types of headaches, with tension headaches being the most common. While most headaches are harmless, some may be a sign of a more serious underlying condition.

At Wellspring Clinic, our providers take a comprehensive and personalized approach to headache care. We carefully evaluate each patient to identify the type and underlyine cause of their headaches, then develop individualized treatment plans using evidence-based therapies to relieve pain, reduce frequency, and improve quality of life.

What causes headaches?

Headaches can be caused by many factors, including muscle tension, nerve sensitivity, stress, poor sleep, dehydration, hormonal changes, neck problems, sinus issues, medication overuse, or underlying neurological conditions. Identifying the cause is key to effective treatment.

When should I see a doctor for headaches?

You should see a provider if your headaches are frequent, worsening, severe, interfering with daily life, waking you from sleep, or no longer responding to over-the-counter medications. New or unusual headaches should always be evaluated. You should look out for these headache symptoms:

  • Dull, aching, throbbing, or pressure-like pain in the head or face
  • Pain in one or both sides of the head
  • Tightness or pressure around the forehead or temple
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Visual changes (such as blurred vision or seeing spots)
  • Fatigue or difficulty concentrating

You should also look out for these warning signs and seek medical evaluation if you experience:

  • Headache accompanied by fever, stiff neck, confusion, or changes in behavior
  • Headache following ahead injury or accident
  • New or worsening headaches, especially after age 50
  • Headaches with weakness, numbness, trouble speaking, or vision loss
  • Headaches accompanied by seizures

What treatments are available for headaches?

Treatment may include preventive medications, acute (rescue) medications, lifestyle and trigger management, physical therapy, nerve blocks, and Botox for chronic migraines. Treatment is tailored to each patient.

Stress and anxiety can trigger or worsen headaches, especially tension headaches and migraines. Managing stress is often part of treatment.
